UDC SUPPORTS ENVIRONMENTAL DEVELOPMENT ON LABOUR DAY 2014
The Urban Development Corporation (UDC) will lend its support to Labour Day 2014 through projects geared at improving the environment at the Fort Clarence Beach Park, Hellshire, St. Catherine on Friday, May 23 between the hours of 7am and 11am.
Labour Day 2014 is being held under the theme “Take A Stand, Beautify Our Land” with special focus on climate-change adaptation activities while beautifying our environment. Beaches provide some protection to residents living near the ocean by acting as a buffer against the high winds and waves of powerful storms or rough seas.
The Labour Day activity falls just after the observation of International Day for Biological Diversity. The theme was chosen to coincide with the designation by the United Nations General Assembly of 2014 as the International Year of Small Island Developing States. Islands and their surrounding near-shore marine areas constitute unique ecosystems often comprising many plant and animal species that are endemic to those islands.
Activities will include, beach cleanup, beautification of key areas through planting of flora, pruning and white washing of trees and general cleaning up of the Beach Park. The Corporation is also providing assistance to the Montego Bay Marine Park as they conduct Beach Cleanup activities along the Montego Bay waterfront.
Fort Clarence is a popular white sand beach destination on the eastern coast of Jamaica. The 16 hectare property is popular for family fun days and picnics, an ideal relaxation spot for residents of Hellshire, Portmore and Kingston.
The opening hours are weekdays (Wednesday to Friday) from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
