Key UDC Projects to get increased Funding from Tourism Ministry
The Honourable Dr Wykeham McNeil, Minister of Tourism and Entertainment has expressed his willingness for the Ministry to strengthen its partnership with the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) by funding key projects in the upcoming year. The Minister was addressing the UDC’s two day Board Retreat at the Knutsford Court Hotel from January 29-30, 2014.
The UDC is presently playing an active role in the completion of a number of projects sponsored by the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF) and Tourism Product Development Company inclusive of upgrading works at the Ocho Rios Pier, Port Royal and downtown Kingston and other areas.
In demonstration of this closer collaboration with the UDC, the Minister has already endorsed the relocation of the Montego Bay-based offices of the Jamaica Tourist Board to the Montego Bay Convention Centre where TPDCO training will also be facilitated for the growth and expansion of the industry. This will also allow for the development of the relationships with hotels in the area in a unified manner.
In his address, Senator KD Knight reiterated that the UDC is the premier development agency in the country and is being depended on for a high performance. He further called for innovative ideas that will redound to the benefit of the entire society. “The UDC must be creative and extraordinary to suit the times and circumstances seeing that we have the track record and potential to add significantly to growth through the pursuit of linkages to impact the other sectors of society’, he added.
The UDC which is celebrating 45 years of making development happen in Jamaica is led by Senator K. D. Knight and in partnership with the Board, management and staff, is committed to continue turning the Corporation around and maximising the assets under its control in the context of national development.
The Corporation is the government’s main urban and rural development agency.
