| Location: |
Downtown, Kingston

|
| Description: |
Over the years, the rise of new commercial
centres uptown, has threatened the continued existence of Downtown
Kingston, as a viable commercial centre. Various efforts have been made to
rescue Downtown Kingston from increasing urban decay and blight. These
have had varying levels of success, but have served to provide periodic
injections to sustain life in the city. |
| |
The Kingston Waterfront Redevelopment Company
(KWRC) formed in 1967, was the first major attempt to resuscitate the area
and bring new life to Downtown Kingston. It was forerunner to The Urban
Development Corporation (UDC), which was established in 1968 and has been
a part of the downtown landscape for three decades. The UDC redefined the
Kingston Waterfront, completing the development in 1975. A new highway -
Ocean Boulevard provides a throughway from the east to the city, and links
the Norman Manley International Airport to Downtown, via a new Coast Road.
Modern skyscrapers provide the infrastructure for a thriving commercial
and business district in Downtown Kingston. |

Preparation of comprehensive and
stakeholder inclusive development plan for the downtown section of the
