UDC COPS INTERNATIONAL AWARD LEADING GIS INNOVATION IN JAMAICA
Jamaica’s principal public sector organisation responsible for the planning and designing of urban environments, the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) once again demonstrated why its conceptualiser the Hon. Edward Seaga noted recently that “the UDC did not let me down”; the Corporation stood out among over 100,000 organisations worldwide, becoming one of 175 countries who copped the 2018 Esri Special Achievement in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Award.
The UDC through the utilization of Esri has leveraged the system to facilitate timely generation of monthly project performance reports, real-time monitoring of project metrics from a single dashboard, project data analysis and enables easy updates to the project portfolio.
Esri which is an international supplier of geographic information system software, web GIS and geodatabase management applications headquartered in California extended commendation through its President Jack Dangermond noting that it was indeed a distinct honour to confer the UDC with the award on the basis of its outstanding and innovative work in GIS technology.
The Corporation which is now a two-time recipient of the Award, the first in 2007; adds to its already extensive repertoire the designation of being the only Jamaican organization in the pool of six local companies to receive the award twice.
According to Acting General Manager of the UDC Ms. Heather Pinnock, at the official handover ceremony at Corporation’s head office, “It gives me tremendous pleasure to stand on the winning end of the pavilion with our colleagues as we celebrate this Special Achievement in Geographic Information Systems and this Award.” She further noted “We look forward to continuing the delivery of world class projects within scope, time and budget as we continue our partnership with ESRI and also sustain our capacity building programme through our Human Resource Management Department”.
In handing over the award, Dr. Silburn Clarke Esri’s local representative to Jamaica praised the Corporation on the excellent job done noting that “the work that is done by the Corporation is among the best work that has been done globally with this software in the 2018 assessment.”
The Corporation continues to utilize varying technologies in the achievement of its mandate of making development happen for the people of Jamaica. A number of projects are being undertaken that will benefit from this innovative use of technology such as the building of Jamaica’s Third City, redevelopment projects in downtown Kingston and Port Royal, Closed Harbour Beach Park Development, Montego Bay and upgrading of Ocho Rios.
