The Urban Development Corporation (UDC) has reopened the Walter Fletcher Beach located on Gloucester Avenue in Montego Bay to the general public. The beach which suspended operations in 2017 following the expiration of the lease agreement between the Corporation and the then leasee reopened its doors just in time for the Easter Holidays on Friday, March 30, 2018.
According to Dr. Damian Graham, General Manager UDC, “the Corporation, as part of its commitment to facilitate public access to beach facilities island wide, commenced major renovation works at the location to facilitate the reopening and meet the need for increased recreational venues in that resort city. Additional renovation works are slated to be done over the next few weeks”.
He further emphasised the plans of the Corporation to ensure continual general access to the facility by the residents of Montego Bay and visitors as part of the long-term planning policy for the city.
The reopening of the Walter Fletcher beach fits into the Corporation’s Montego Bay Waterfront Redevelopment Programme which includes the Groyne Rehabilitation Project and the Closed Harbour Beach Park Development.
The Walter Fletcher Beach will be opened to the public from Wednesday to Sunday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Entry rates for adults is JMD$500 and children J$200. The UDC remains committed to its mandate of making development happen for the people of Jamaica and celebrated on March 21, 2018 its fiftieth anniversary of fulfilling its national mandate.
