The Centre is being constructed by UDC through China National Complete Plant Import and Export Corporation (COMPLANT) on approximately 9.3 hectares of land between the Half Moon Golf Course and Rose Hall Great House. The project is funded by the Government of Jamaica (GOJ) and the EXIM Bank of China. The Centre which is designed as a modern state of the art facility, capable of hosting large and small meetings, conferences, exhibitions, banquets, weddings and other events is scheduled to be completed during November 2010. |

Carl Bennett, both members of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) and Michael Boothe, Project Manager, Urban Development Corporation (UDC) observe as construction workers install the belting in the concession area at the GC Foster College of Physical Education in St. Catherine. The scope of works for the project also includes construction of changing rooms and sanitary facilities, seating for 1400 spectators and the creation of a football field. The UDC is collaborating with the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) to upgrade the facilty.Other sporting facilities being upgraded by the UDC include the Montego Bay Sports Complex at Catherine Hall in St. James, and the National Stadium in Kingston. |

At this workshop several teachers from 17 primary and high schools in Portland were exposed to strategies to identify and correct learning difficulties which impact on students’ ability to read well. Part two of this workshop will be held on July 24 and 25 targeting teachers from 25 basic and infant schools. Other community development activities implemented by the Corporation in Portland include Healthy Lifestyle Workshops, Road Safety and Values and Attitudes Programmes. |

The UDC is collaborating with the Kingston City Centre Improvement Company (KCCIC) to construct the bus park between Port Royal Street and Water Lane, at the corner of Darling Street. The scope of works for the bus park includes construction of bus sheds, paving of bus lanes, construction of a parking area and a pedestrian bridge. The bus park will consist of 49 bus bays, with a capacity to accommodate some 273 buses daily on schedule. The KCCIC is responsible for constructing the commercial centre, inclusive of ticket office, shops and other support facilities for the centre. Alcar Construction and Haulage Company will be constructing the Transport Centre. |

The works currently being implemented at the Sports Complex is funded by the Governments of Jamaica and Venezuela. The Venezuelan loan was provided by the Bank of Economic and Social Development of Venezuela (BANDES) and Venezuelan contractors Presport Joint Ventures are responsible for upgrading the Complex. |

| UDC SUPPORTS WORLD WETLANDS DAY |

| Royan Gayle (r), Environmental Officer, Urban Development Corporation (UDC) tells students from St. Catherine High about the areas in Hellshire Hills and Goat Islands, where wetlands can be found. The occasion was a tour organized for students in St. Catherine by the Hellshire Environment Management Plan (HEMP) Team on World Wetlands Day. The Hemp Team is employed by the UDC to develop and implement management programmes for Hellshire Hills and Goat Islands, an area rich in natural resources and one of several designated areas managed by the UDC. The Team used World Wetlands Day, this year to expose 20 students from Braeton Primary and Junior High, Waterford High and St. Catherine High, to the importance of wetlands and explained to them the significance of the theme for World Wetlands Day, Upstream, Downstream, Wetlands connect us all. The UDC partnered with the National Irrigation Commission Limited, the National Water Commission and Wastewater Operation and Management Company Limited to implement the tour. |

| Errol Levy, Deputy Chief Education Officer, Ministry of Education talks to the most disciplined students from St. James Preparatory School about their Land of Manners Corner, while their teacher Paulette Hylton looks on. The occasion was a Values and Attitudes Fair hosted by the UDC in St. James, where St. James Preparatory received second prize for their Land of Manners Corner in UDC’s 2009 “Land of Manners Competition”. The aim of this competition is to promote positive values and attitudes among basic school children in the UDC project areas. Ten schools from St. James participated in the competition which forms part of the Values and Attitudes Programme established by the UDC in 2003. The programme is also carried out in select basic schools in Hellshire, Westmoreland and Portland. |

| Royan Gayle (r), Environmental Officer, Urban Development Corporation (UDC) tells students from St. Catherine High about the areas in Hellshire Hills and Goat Islands, where wetlands can be found. The occasion was a tour organized for students in St. Catherine by the Hellshire Environment Management Plan (HEMP) Team on World Wetlands Day. The Hemp Team is employed by the UDC to develop and implement management programmes for Hellshire Hills and Goat Islands, an area rich in natural resources and one of several designated areas managed by the UDC. The Team used World Wetlands Day, this year to expose 20 students from Braeton Primary and Junior High, Waterford High and St. Catherine High, to the importance of wetlands and explained to them the significance of the theme for World Wetlands Day, Upstream, Downstream, Wetlands connect us all. The UDC partnered with the National Irrigation Commission Limited, the National Water Commission and Wastewater Operation and Management Company Limited to implement the tour. |

The occasion was a media launch for the event which was held at Hotel Four Seasons on Friday, December 19, 2008. “Fireworks on the Waterfront 2008” is scheduled for New Year’s Eve, Wednesday, December 31, 2008 and will take place along Ocean Boulevard. The event will comprise a kiddies’ area with a variety of rides and activities, an exciting stage show and a party dubbed “Front Row”. Fireworks on the Waterfront was first staged in 1999 and forms part of UDC’s ongoing efforts to promote downtown Kingston as an ideal location for both business and pleasure. |

The occasion was a tour of the Bogue Lagoon in Montego Bay on Friday, February 1 in celebration of World Wetlands Day which is held on February 2 each year. Under the theme “Healthy Wetlands, Healthy People” the UDC in collaboration with the Montego Bay Marine Park and the Marine Police conducted talks and tours of the lagoon with students from five secondary and tertiary institutions in Montego Bay as part of its public education programme on the environment. |

Mrs Chin explained that the discomfort experienced by Miss Mitchell reflects that of a child who is unable to focus on any one thing for any extended period of time and therefore becomes very restive. Other participants in the demonstration from left are Alva Williams, Ken Wright Primary and Benjamin Whitmore of Windsor Primary Schools. Looking on in the background is Mrs. Rosemarie Morris, liaison officer, Urban Development Corporation (UDC). The occasion was a two day Remedial Reading Workshop held at Christ Church Education Centre in Portland. Twenty teachers from 15 primary, all age and high school teachers in Portland participated in the workshop which was organised by the UDC as part of its community outreach programme. Teachers were taught how to assess students and were given different reading intervention strategies. |

Other schools completed and handed over to the Ministry of Education and Youth include Frome Technical, Westmoreland; Irwin High and Primary, Success Primary, Spot Valley High, Green Pond Infant, Primary and High, St. James; Holland High, Hague Infant and Primary, Trelawny and Hopewell High, Lucea Infant, and Orange Bay High, Hanover.
