On July 21 and 22, approximately 1000 children from 14 institutions were treated by the UDC  to a day filled with sun, sand and sea at  the 30th Hellshire Summer Fun, which was held at Fort Clarence Beach. PLANS FOR FALMOUTH

The occasion was a Community Expo, held on July 24, at Water Square in Falmouth. The objective of the Expo was to inform the various interest groups inclusive of residents of Falmouth and surrounding towns, business, civic and religious groups of plans for the upgrading of the town being co-ordinated by the UDC in conjunction with the Trelawny Parish Council and other stakeholder agencies, ahead of the arrival of the world’s largest cruise ship, the Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas scheduled for early 2011.

UDC HOSTS BIOSPHERE WORKSHOP

MONTEGO BAY SPORTS COMPLEX

Spectators watch the Western Primary Invitational meet from the stands at the Montego Bay Sports Complex at Catherine Hall. The Complex was officially opened following the upgrading of the facility by Venezuelan contractors Presport Joint Ventures, on behalf of the Urban Development Corporation (UDC). This phase resulted in the construction of grandstand and bleacher seats to accommodate approximately 7,000 spectators. The works implemented also included the construction of bathrooms, changing rooms, administrative offices, concession areas, storerooms, parking areas, ticket booths and an entrance feature with the requisite access for the physically challenged and the construction of perimeter fencing.

Downtown Comes Alive

His Worship, Councillor Desmond McKenzie, Mayor of Kingston and  St. Andrew and Joy Douglas, General Manager, Urban Development Corporation (UDC) admire the Christmas tree which was lit in Orange Square on the Kingston Waterfront. The occasion was the UDC’s Annual Carol Service and Tree Lighting Ceremony which took place on December 17. The event featured performances from Toni-ann Baker, of the Scotia Singers, the Corporate Area Civil Court Choir, the Bank of Jamaica Choir, Musical Apostles Steel Band and the UDC Chorale.

UDC HONOURS EXCELLENT STUDENTS IN PORTLAND

Both students were awarded for maintaining exemplary academic standard and conduct over the past 3 years as well as their participation in extra curricular activities. The students were among 43 students from 8 primary and 2 secondary schools who were honoured for outstanding achievements by the UDC at a function held at Happy Grove High School in Portland on Thursday, November 26.

STUDENTS AGAINST RECKLESS DRIVING
 

Students and teachers from Portland march against reckless driving through Port Antonio to the Old Marina. The occasion was a Road Safety Programme organized by the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) as part of its community development activities. During the month of November the UDC also organized road safety programmes at Mount Alvernia Preparatory in Montego Bay and the Negril All Age School in Westmoreland. The UDC collaborated with the Road Safety Unit, Ministry of Transport and Works and the Port Antonio Police in implementing the Road Safety Programme.

EMPOWERING FATHERS

WESTWOOD HIGH CHAMPIONS

The presentation of awards was made at the Green Grotto Schools Enviro Awards ceremony held at the Green Grotto Caves and Attractions on November 5, 2009. Ten high and primary schools participated in this year’s competition and the winning projects focused on energy and water conservation and recycling.

UDC PROMOTES HEALTHY LIFESTYLE IN PORTLAND

Anthony Morrison, marketing manager, Portland Co-operative Credit Union presents a cheque to Calford Fraser, a student at the Boston Primary and Infant School, while Veron Hussey, community development officer, Urban Development Corporation (UDC) looks on. The school emerged first place winner in a banner competition organized by the UDC. The competition formed part of a Healthy Lifestyle Fair, held by the Corporation at Poinciana Park in the parish of Portland, during October which is recognized as health month. The UDC partnered with several stakeholders in the parish including the Portland Health Department and Child Development Agency to promote this year’s theme ‘Love your body, Treat your body right’ and had participants from 10 primary and high schools and the Fairy Hill community in attendance.
