A tour of the caves enables visitors to journey into the underground and rediscover Jamaican history. Previously known as Runaway, Dairy, Rum, Hopewell and Dry Harbour Caves, the Green Grotto Caves are said to have provided shelter for Jamaica’s first inhabitants, the Taino Indians.  The caves boast a maze of interconnected chambers, majestic stalactites and stalagmites and other exquisite formations.

The Attraction which is managed by the Urban Development Corporation (UDC), through the St. Ann Development Company (SADCO) was acquired by the UDC in 1999, upgraded and reopened on April 17, 2000. The most recent achievement of the Attraction occurred during April 2012, when Green Grotto Caves became the Caribbean’s first tourism attraction to achieve EarthCheck’s highest accolade of Platinum Certification. This certification recognises 10 years of continuous reporting under the EarthCheck benchmarking and certification programme.

Earthcheck Certification, a programme managed by EC3 Global is widely regarded as the largest certifier of sustainable travel and tourism businesses. Earthcheck is one of the world’s most recognized environmental benchmarking and certification programmes.
