UDC Committed to Completing Historic Linstead Market

  • Posted on: 14 July 2013

The Urban Development Corporation (UDC) remains committed to the completion of the Linstead Market Renovation Project. Work on the project which started in 2012 as part of the Jamaica 50 Legacy Projects is now nearing the end of the second phase and involved urgent structural repairs to the main market building.

The Canteen and Old Market Buildings were completed in the first phase of the renovations. To date all major structural repairs have been completed except for minor variations that were identified and are being addressed.

With reference to a recent news report in the media, the UDC wishes to state that all payments are up to date and discussions continue with contractor Tankweld Limited to complete works as per agreement. It should be noted that this does not include rehabilitation of  the roof, as there is no contract in place at this time with Tankweld or any other company to undertake this work.

The roof rehabilitation forms a critical part of the third phase of works which also includes provision of insulation and skylights, upgrading of the bathrooms and painting. Funds to carry out this phase of works are being secured and the works are to be procured.

The Linstead Market Building was constructed approximately thirty five (35) years ago. Over the years, there has been structural deterioration, which has compromised the safety of the building and its ability to resist earthquakes. In addition, the roofing to the first floor suffered from major leaks and was not insulated.

The UDC intervened to effect the necessary structural repairs and Tankweld Metals was contracted to carry out the structural repairs which began in January 24, 2013.
