UDC Spearheads Red Rose Fish Market Rehabilitation Works

The Urban Development Corporation (UDC) through the PetroCaribe fund is spearheading the rehabilitation of the Red Rose Fish Market as part of the re-development of the downtown Kingston market district at a contract value of approximately JMD$43 million.

The works on the Fish Market at the intersection of Rose Lane and Heywood Street will include the construction of a new portal frame structure, vendor stall area and fish storage compartments along with fencing repairs and other minor repairs. This has resulted in the relocation of the current vendors to an adjacent location a stone’s throw away while construction is in progress. Works are being carried out by NF Barnes Construction Company. The Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation is a major partner in the project as the owners and operators of the facility.

The project is running parallel to the Jubilee Market project also funded by a Petro Caribe grant. The upgrade of the market district is one facet of the Downtown Kingston and Port Royal Redevelopment Plan 2030 which continues to make progress, as the UDC works with partners and investors to facilitate its success. Digicel, for example, partnered with the UDC and the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC) on the reconstruction and upgrade of stalls in Coronation market. The UDC also increased the parking capacity around the market district with the upgrade and fencing of the Pechon Street Car Park.

The Corporation sees Downtown Kingston as the city of possibilities, the ideal location for work, home, leisure, culture and entertainment. Current efforts are geared towards championing the transformation of Downtown and revitalizing the area.  This reflects the efforts of partnerships with both local and international organizations.

Particularly, over the last few year years, there have been significant physical transformation in the downtown area led by multinational corporations such as Digicel which took the decision to construct its Global Headquarters on the Waterfront on property sold by the UDC.

Aspects of the plan already completed include the construction of a bus park, one component of a multimodal Transport Centre and the upgrading of St. William Grant Park.  Sustained sociocultural vitality and life is anticipated in downtown with the addition of the Festival Marketplace and the Simon Bolivar Cultural Centre.
